Carbon Capture, Utilisation, & Storage

Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) is a vital area of technology that includes the separation of carbon dioxide from industrial flue gases and the subsequent reuse of the carbon dioxide or transportation to a storage site, either onshore or offshore. Several technologies are available for each step, making this a broad field involving many disciplines.

CCUS is known to be key in cutting GHG emissions to meet climate targets as industry transitions away from oil and gas towards more renewable energy sources. For this reason CCUS is a major focus in various funding programs, including Horizon Europe.

Bio-based Materials

The production of bio-based materials can refer to technologies as established as first generation bioethanol or as complex as cascading biorefinery concepts. The type of feedstock and connection with the rest of the value chain, especially for drop-in bio-based compounds, are two of the important factors for classifying the types of processes.

Bio-based materials contribute significantly to improving resource efficiency and enabling a low-carbon economy. Furthermore, they enable economic growth and employment, particularly in rural and coastal areas.

Power-to-X Processes

Power-to-X entails the production of value-added chemicals or energy forms through the use of electricity, usually considered to be from a renewable source, such as wind or solar electricity. While electrochemical reactors, often connected with using carbon dioxide as a feedstock, are often at the core of these processes, other technologies focus on ways to decrease steam demand in industry.

By being able to implement Power-to-X widely in industry, it will be possible to more effectively manage the ever increasing amounts of renewable electricity sources being implemented. This would alleviate demands on the power grid while saving on extensive grid upgrading.

Waste to Resource

The use of waste streams is a cross-cutting theme that connects with, especially, CCU and bio-based materials. These processes can involve waste streams from various industries, but also fractions of municipal solid waste that are not recycled. Chemical and biochemical processes are used to convert these streams into fuels, chemical feedstocks, and even consumer products.

Utilizing waste streams as feedstocks is vital to realise a sustainable circular economy, while at the same time relieving the burden of managing increasing amounts of municipal waste. With space and resources often lacking in Europe, this can have major benefits for the regions.

Circular Economy

The concept of a “circular economy” is overarching, connecting with many areas of technologies to make industry and society more sustainable. Next to the technological innovations, it is key to develop the business models around the newly created sustainable value chains in order to achieve economic feasibility and wide implementation of circular concepts.

Within a circular economy, resource utilisation would be maximised, thereby minimising waste. Increased recycling of materials, such as plastics, plus exploitation of synergies between industries and processes will further serve to help European industries remain competitive in global markets.

Sustainable Transport

The concept of sustainable transport encompasses various technologies that replace the fossil fuels normally required for transport with sustainable alternatives. Renewable fuels, including biofuels, and electric vehicles are two of the main focus areas. Within these, the use of renewable electricity, for example to produce hydrogen, convert carbon dioxide, or recharge batteries, is key.

With transport accounting for 20% of global energy consumption and 25% of carbon emissions, it is vital to decarbonise the sector. The distributed nature of emissions sources and logistical limitations create unique challenges in this area.
